Mahogony deck
Mahogany decking is known for its rich color, fine grain, knot-free appearance and natural resistance to rot, insects and splintering.
Not all types of mahogany are expensive like the furniture grade mahogany typically imported from Honduras. Mahogany decking is usually Brazilian Cambara or Indonesian Meranti.
Mahogany is typically less expensive than Redwood, Ipe and A or D Cedar. Being a hard wood that's resistant to decay, it holds up well outdoors under heavy foot traffic. Its splinter resistant properties make it great for bare feet and kids.
Although not as durable as some of the exotic hardwoods, Cedar is still a popular choice for outdoor applications because of its rich appearance and natural resistance to insects and decay.
However, Cedar is softer than Mahogany and more prone to damage from heavy foot traffic and furniture sliding.
Cedar is generally around 3 times more expensive than pressure treated wood and slightly more expensive than Mahogany.
Man-made decking is good choice if you're looking for a low maintenance option. These materials consist of composite plastics, PVC and vinyl.
Prices for man-made decking materials fall somewhere between pressure treated and some of the exotic hard woods.
The main advantage of man-made composite decking is that it's low maintenance. It doesn't need to be sealed or stained every couple of years, but it does need to be hosed down periodically.
The undercarriage of any deck is always going to be made of pressure treated lumber (PT). If you want to keep costs down to a minimum, then PT is also going to be your best option for the actual decking and railings.
PT will last decades and stand up well to heavy foot traffic. It's also decay and insect resistant as well. You can choose to have it stained to look like other woods such as cedar, or mahogany. Clear stains will preserve the natural wood look too.
PT decking does need to be treated or stained every few years to ensure longevity and color.
After your deck has been built and you have time to take in the details of the workmanship, that's when you start to notice the small "things" ...
And when the work is done with care and precision, those small details that come into focus are the ones that make you feel like you hired the right deck builder.
